Ocean Black
Published in Paperback by Pinnacle Books (November, 1995)
Author: Hank Bostrum
Average review score:

very quick and engrossing read
This book, which I picked up on the spur of the moment at a noble bookstore that will remain nameless, was a nice, fast read. This book will never win any awards, but it is entertaining. As a marine scientist/techno guru I found the "inventions" described in the book very plausible. The basis of the book is that two competing oceanic-based companies, one led by a sensible visionary and the other by a money-hungry sociopath, are trying to make sea-floor drilling a viable alternative to onshore drilling. One company uses small nuclear weapons to mine while the other might if it had thought of it first. The characters aren't deeply explored, but it isn't necessary. In short, this is the perfect book to read at the beach, on vacation, or anywhere where you can suspend reality for a while.

Ocean Energy Recovery: The State of the Art
Published in Paperback by American Society of Civil Engineers (December, 1992)
Author: Richard J. Seymour
Average review score:

A pocket guide to ocean energy recovery technologies
This is a thorough overview on the vast issue of energy recovery form the oceans. It is important to classify it as trully useful brief guide in all currently proven technology fields, tidal, Ocean thermal (OTEC) and wave energy. Practically an assembly of thoroughly compiled papers, this guide will assess theoretical infrastructure, technological approach, advantages and problems, future research, added to an elementary assessment on economics; all within about 300 pages.
The rapidly rising international concern on wave energy technology, is faced with a considerable hazard in obtaining some basic and resumed information on wave energy technology and perspective. An increased percentage of the inquiries addressed to my office, are focused on demand for proven financial and feasibility data. This guide should prove of particular importance to students, academics and engineers seeking some comparative financial information on wave energy projects, compiled by the pronounced authority of Prof. J.Falnes. Although considerable progress has accumulated since when published in 1992, the book remains a definite and solid introductory guide -particularly so for the popular OWC (Oscillating Water Column) technology.
State of the art...is a risky issue to attempt -even as a title effect. That is among reasons on why only four stars are awarded.

Oceans of Consolation: Personal Accounts of Irish Migration to Australia
Published in Hardcover by Melbourne University Press (December, 1995)
Author: David Fitzpatrick
Average review score:

A sound reference for researchers
Mr Fitzpatrick has researched this topic well, as one would expect, and produced a book which will be of immense help to researchers and family historians.

With an Irish/Australian family background, I found the book very helpful in putting a detailed perspective on the privations of the Irish Immigrants, and those left behind in the homeland.

The book is not a light read. But it is very readable.

PS. I wish the publisher had bound the book as well as the author/editor had written it. Be careful. It will fall apart if opened wide!

Interesting commentary which is intriguing but elusive.
The concepts in this book focus on the Mandala principle of Buddhism, presented as a series of commentaries and questions from students following each commentary. The author reveals the subtle wisdom behind the mandala principle and how it relates to our own personal styles. It is good reading for those who wish to know more about the perspectives of Buddhism

Thanks For The Insight
As the son of a sergeant that served from Fiji, Bougainville, Leyte, Cebu, etc, thru Japan, I was very happy to read the General's account.

I found myself riveted to the book, trying to understand my father's footsteps. The General lays out much on strategy and location; that helped a lot. I now find myself wanting to know more about what it was like for the regular GIs, the infantrymen.
